Layla Moran, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West & Abingdon and the party's Education spokesperson, visited Winslow last weekend to make a statement about the local and national party's opposition to the proposed Oxford to Cambridge Expressway - effectively a new motorway cutting through the heart of the Buckingham constituency.

If the Expressway were to go ahead, Liberal Democrats believe it would cause huge disruption to Winslow and other towns and villages across the constituency. And with the possibility of up to one million new homes along the route, it would change the character of the area completely.

She also expressed support for the proposed new East/West rail link, as a much more environmentally friendly way of solving the area's transport problems.

She was joined by a group of local party members, including many of the prospective candidates for the forthcoming Buckinghamshire Unitary Council Election in May. The Liberal Democrats will be campaigning hard to end 125 years of Conservative control in Buckinghamshire.

Commenting on the visit: Layla Moran said:

"The disastrous Oxford-Cambridge Expressway, proposed by the Conservatives, will blight our landscape, threaten our environment and harm biodiversity. We need to invest in sustainable transport, not build multi-lane motorways.
"During the election, the Conservatives realised just how unpopular their Expressway plans were, and promised a 'review', which has not yet materialised.
"Well, I and the Liberal Democrats want to scrap the Expressway altogether.
"We need a fully electrified East-West Rail, and for greater investment in sustainable transport within each county to allow people to travel green every day across their local area.
"I'm looking forward to speaking to the residents of Winslow about the Expressway, East-West Rail and other local and national issues."
